PAIR - Vintage Navy and White Rope Sconces
This pair of vintage brass rope sconces, with white and navy trimmed shades, will add a classic, nautical touch to your home.
The design of these sconces dates back to the reign of King Louis XVI of France (1774–1792). Neoclassical design looked to the symmetry, restraint, and pastoral themes of ancient Rome and Greece. Designers began incorporating elements from nature and everyday life—like floral garlands, bows, draped ribbons, and tightly twisted ropes—into structural home furnishings.
The rope, knot, and tassel motif used in these sconces was a playful, metallic trompe-l'œil (trick of the eye). Master bronze-casters created the illusion that the heavy metal sconce was actually a pair of flexible, soft textile ropes hanging from a central wall rosette, tied in a neat knot, and weighted down by fringed tassels.
